NCATE and TEAC Announce Joint Design Team Members for Future System of Teacher Education Accreditation
Dr. Frank B. Murray, President of the Teacher Education Accreditation Council Dr. James Cibulka, President of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education NCATE and TEAC have identified the members of the joint design team which both organizations' boards sanctioned in June. The team's task is to develop a specific proposal for a system of teacher education accreditation with multiple pathways.

It's All about Student Learning (2008)It’s All about Student Learning, edited by Arthur E. Wise and associates, is available now! This new 220 page book contains assessments from 3 consortia and 13 institutions. Based on the work of the Reading First Teacher Education Network (RFTEN), Preparing Effective Teachers of Reading will show educators and administrators (K-12 and higher education) how a higher education initiative used collaboration and partnerships to respond to one of the greatest needs facingthe nation-improving the reading achievement of poor and minority children.

The book will also provide readers with a forum for understanding scientifically-based reading research (SBRR) and instruction, and the five essential components of reading. In addition, the book will showcase, through evaluation findings and a case study, how diverse geographic, ethnic, and racial institutions are creating national models for bridging the achievement gap in reading, teaching reading, preparing new teachers, and engaging key stakeholders by transforming curricula and syllabi, establishing reading centers, and providing directed teaching and tutoring experiences for candidates.

Revised NCATE Unit Standards in Effect in Fall 2008
NCATE follows a regular cycle of standards revision to ensure that the unit standards incorporate the latest thinking in the field. The latest round of standards revision has concluded. NCATE 's Executive Board ratified the unit standards on May 11, and they will go into effect for all NCATE institutions in Fall 2008.

NCATE Studies Promising Approach to Solving Qualified Teacher Shortage in Urban Schools
With funding from the MetLife Foundation, NCATE has initiated an Urban Teacher Residency Project to study teacher residency programs, which are targeted at preparing and retaining qualified teachers in high needs schools. These fledgling programs are succeeding in helping districts to educate and retain well prepared teachers in urban areas. Read the release.
